An 82-year-old man, identified as a retired obstetrician, was arrested on Friday and led before an investigating magistrate on Monday in the western port city of Patras on felony child pornography charges.
The retired physician was arrested following an investigation by authorities into a case involving online child pornography, according to a local news site.
After his arrest, he was brought before a relevant prosecutor, who referred him to the investigating magistrate.
A police announcement
In a later announcement, Greek Police’s (EL.AS) cyber crime unit said that during the investigation of information received through the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), an internet user was identified who had uploaded material depicting the sexual abuse of minors online. The victims, according to reports, were apparently under the age of 12.
A thorough and detailed police probe followed, which led authorities to 82-year-old and his residence.
Subsequently, a search was carried out at his home on Friday in the presence of a prosecutor, with police hauling away digital devices.
Authorities claimed they found a large number of photos and videos depicting the sexual abuse of pre-teen minors, as well as originally produced files showing his own underage relatives – reportedly granddaughters – in nude or semi-nude poses.
The seized digital evidence will be sent to a specialized crime lab for further examination.
