New allegations surrounding the fatal crash in Rhodes that killed a mother and daughter have intensified public anger, after claims emerged that the 44-year-old BMW driver attempted to interfere with evidence linked to the investigation.
The driver, who was released pending trial under court-imposed restrictions and after posting bail, is now reportedly at the center of a new round of inquiries after accusations that he sought access to his seized vehicle in an effort to alter critical electronic data.
The crash, which shocked Greece and sparked widespread outrage, claimed the lives of two women, a mother and her daughter, in Rhodes earlier this month.
According to Greek media reports, investigators are examining allegations that the defendant made two separate attempts to gain access to the BMW, which is being held at a roadside assistance company facility pending a court-appointed forensic inspection.
The first alleged attempt involved a phone call to a roadside assistance employee. According to the claims, the driver allegedly asked the worker to carry out actions that would destroy data stored in the vehicle’s electronic control system — commonly referred to as the car’s “computer brain.”
The employee reportedly refused to cooperate.
A second alleged approach followed the next day, this time through an intermediary and directed at another employee of the same company. The stated reason was allegedly to “take photographs” of the vehicle, though the complaint claims the real objective was to gain access to the BMW and potentially alter or remove crucial evidence before forensic experts could examine it.
The allegations come amid mounting scrutiny over the decision to release the driver pending trial, despite the severity of the crash and eyewitness testimony describing extremely dangerous driving behavior moments before the collision.
As previously reported, multiple witnesses claimed the BMW was traveling at very high speed and allegedly ran a red light before crashing into the victims’ vehicle.
Relatives of the victims reacted furiously to the driver’s release, with family members questioning whether justice was being adequately served in a case that has drawn national attention.
The investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains ongoing, while authorities are now also expected to examine whether any attempt was made to tamper with evidence connected to the vehicle.
