A severe storm struck the wider Kozani area in northern Greece on Thursday night, causing flooding on roads and bridges after intense rainfall.
The storm began shortly after 10 p.m. and mainly affected areas including Ellispontos, the Ypsilantis municipal area and the plain of Mavrodendri, in the Kozani regional unit.
Large amounts of water accumulated in low-lying areas, creating flooding problems and making some roads difficult to access. In the local community of Agios Dimitrios, mud and debris covered parts of the road network, while a nearby bridge was flooded once again, making vehicle movement dangerous.
Authorities described the situation in Sarigiol as particularly challenging, as settlements in the area received a very large amount of rainfall in a short period of time.
Rainfall measurements
According to data from weather monitoring stations operated by the Municipality of Kozani and the Kozani regional authorities, rainfall totals recorded by 11 p.m. reached:
- Koilada: 85 millimeters
- Agios Dimitrios: 60 millimeters
- Mavrodendri plain: 51 millimeters
Authorities urge caution
Local authorities have called on residents and drivers to remain cautious, especially in villages located on the slopes of surrounding mountain areas, including Drepano, Galani, Koilada, Kapnochori and Leventi.
Officials warned that during such storms, fast-moving water can carry mud and debris, creating temporary streams through residential areas and roads that normally do not experience water flow.
Power outages reported
The storm also caused electricity interruptions in several areas. The Kozani Fire Service received one call to pump water from a home in Drepano.
Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel through areas with accumulated water and to follow instructions from authorities until conditions are fully restored.
