Mostly sunny conditions will prevail across much of mainland Greece on Thursday, September 17, while rain and thunderstorms are expected in Crete, the Dodecanese and parts of the Aegean.
According to Greece’s National Meteorological Service, local rain and scattered thunderstorms are forecast in Crete and the Dodecanese, with storms potentially becoming locally intense in Crete during the morning. Conditions are expected to gradually improve in Crete during the afternoon and in the Dodecanese by evening.
Elsewhere, partly cloudy skies will develop, with temporary increases in cloud cover and local rain early in the morning in Evia and the Cyclades. Local showers are also possible around midday and in the afternoon, mainly over mountainous areas of mainland Greece.
Northerly winds will reach 3 to 4 Beaufort in western Greece and 4 to 6 Beaufort in the east, with gusts reaching 7 Beaufort locally in the Aegean. Temperatures are expected to rise slightly.
Rain and thunderstorms across the islands
According to the Athens National Observatory’s meteo service, sunny weather is expected across most of mainland Greece, with temporary afternoon cloud cover mainly in western areas.
Rain and isolated thunderstorms that began in Crete after midnight Wednesday are expected to spread quickly to the Dodecanese and eastern Aegean islands, including Samos and Ikaria. Rain is also possible in the southern Cyclades and the Ionian Islands.
The weather systems are expected to weaken during the evening.
Saharan dust will continue to affect the atmosphere over Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese and the eastern Aegean islands.
Temperatures across Greece
Temperatures are forecast to range from:
- Western Macedonia: 11 to 26 C
- Macedonia and Thrace: 11 to 30 C
- Epirus: 11 to 29 C
- Thessaly: 10 to 31 C
- Central mainland Greece: 11 to 30 C
- Peloponnese: 10 to 29 C
- Crete: 12 to 27 C
- Ionian Islands: 15 to 29 C
- Northern and northeastern Aegean islands: 17 to 26 C
- Other Aegean islands: 17 to 27 C
Strong winds in the Aegean
Winds in the Aegean will initially blow from the north-northeast at 4 to 5 Beaufort before shifting to northerly and northwesterly directions from midday.
In the Ionian Sea, winds will mainly come from the west-northwest at 2 to 3 Beaufort.
Athens and Thessaloniki
Attica is expected to remain sunny throughout the day. Northerly to northeasterly winds will reach 3 to 4 Beaufort and locally up to 5 Beaufort. Temperatures in the region will range from 15 to 29 C.
Thessaloniki will also have clear skies throughout the day. Winds will remain light at 2 to 3 Beaufort, mainly from southerly directions during the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 13 to 30 C.
