Albanian police have arrested the suspected perpetrator of a fatal altercation that took place in the early hours of August 18 in Ksamil, near Saranda in southern Albania, and left a 20-year-old Portuguese tourist dead.
Following an extensive investigation, police announced that they had solved the case and made a series of arrests involving people being investigated either for their role in the altercation or for allegedly helping the suspect flee.
He Tried to Break Up the Fight and Was Attacked
According to preliminary investigation findings, the incident began inside a nightclub at a tourist resort in the area and continued on the beach outside a neighboring establishment, where the 20-year-old’s body was later found.
During the altercation, which involved several people, the arrested 29-year-old allegedly attacked the victim with a sharp object, inflicting multiple wounds to his chest and back. According to police findings, another person also allegedly took part in the attack, punching the 20-year-old.
The investigation also found that employees of the nightclub were involved in the incident. They allegedly struck the victim before the attack with the sharp object and then left the scene.
As for what triggered the fight, authorities are examining witness accounts suggesting that tensions began following an incident involving a woman. Local media reports say the 20-year-old intervened in an attempt to calm the situation and was then fatally attacked.
Suspect Found Hiding in Car Trunk
The 29-year-old suspected perpetrator was arrested in the Levan area of Fier following a coordinated police operation. The suspect was discovered at a police roadblock, hiding in the trunk of a vehicle traveling toward Tirana.

Two foreign nationals were traveling in the car and, according to authorities, knew that the 29-year-old was hiding in the trunk and were attempting to help him escape from the area.
A total of 41 people have been brought in for questioning, while 11 arrests have been made so far as part of the preliminary investigation. Authorities are also continuing their search for another person who remains wanted.
Suspect Previously Known to Authorities
The investigation also revealed that the arrested 29-year-old had previously come to the attention of law enforcement authorities.
On April 13, in Kent, Britain, he was involved in a police pursuit after failing to stop when officers signaled him for a check, resulting in his vehicle crashing. A subsequent search of the car uncovered quantities of cocaine, while authorities also determined that the vehicle had false license plates.
The case remains in the hands of the relevant police and prosecutorial authorities as they work to fully establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack.
