A training aircraft crashed on Wednesday morning at Dekelia Air Base in Tatoi, north of Athens, prompting an emergency response from base personnel.

Two pilots, an instructor and a trainee, were on board at the time. Both sustained serious injuries and have been transported by ambulance to the 251 Hellenic Air Force General Hospital for treatment.

According to initial reports, the aircraft which was a P2002-JF, experienced a malfunction during takeoff. As it began to gain altitude, part of the wing detached and fell to the ground, causing the plane to crash.

Sources indicate that the pilots are not members of the Hellenic Air Force’s elite “Icarus” training corps. However, at present, there has been no official statement from the Hellenic Air Force General Staff regarding the incident.

Dekelia (Tatoi) Air Base is one of the main training facilities of the Hellenic Air Force, regularly used for pilot instruction and flight exercises. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the accident.
