The Balkan Athletics Championships concluded in Volos over the weekend with two more medals for Team Greece.
For yet another year, Dimitris Tsiamis climbed onto the podium at the Balkan Championships in the men’s triple jump. The 44-year-old jumper opened his competition with a leap of 16.15 meters (+0.7), while his second attempt, although longer than 16 meters, was ruled a foul.
He improved to 16.18 meters (+1.3) on his third attempt and then chose to pass on his final three jumps, having already achieved the performance target he had set before the competition. With his mark of 16.18 meters, Tsiamis claimed the bronze medal and reached the podium of the event for the fifth time in his career. Turkey’s Can Özüpek won the event with a jump of 16.46 meters.
In the women’s 5,000 meters, Ntenisa Balla won the bronze medal after setting a new season’s best of 16:32.05, while Eirini Tsoupaki finished fourth in 16:53.56. The gold medal went to Turkey’s Edibe Yağız, who crossed the line in 16:17.50.
Greece’s women’s 4×400-meter relay team captured the silver medal. Rafaelia Giannoulidou, Ioulianna Roussou, Aikaterini Grigoriadou, and Anastasia Rapti combined for a time of 3:38.05. In the men’s 4×400-meter relay, Greece finished fourth, with Spyros Giannis Konidaris, Vangelis Kaikis, Kyriakos Tsikilis, and Giannis Simoni clocking 3:09.88.
Greece Wins 39 Medals
On the second day of competition, Greece collected five gold, eight silver, and six bronze medals.
Across the two days of the championships, the Greek team finished with a total of 11 gold, 16 silver, and 12 bronze medals, bringing its overall tally to 39.
Turkey topped the gold medal table with 13 gold medals.
