Renovation work has begun at Athens’ eponymous Panathenaic Stadium under an extensive upgrade program funded entirely through a private donation by Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., the shipping group controlled by Evangelos Marinakis, the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) announced on Friday.

The project marks the first comprehensive modernization effort at the historic venue in decades, combining infrastructure improvements with conservation work intended to preserve the character of the all-marble U-shaped stadium, while upgrading its capacity to host international sporting events.

The site where the Panathenaic Stadium stands today was restored in order to host the first modern Olympics Games in 1896. The marathon event for the 2004 Athens Games also concluded at the iconic venue.

The first phase involves replacing the currently outdated synthetic running track, which has deteriorated after years of use for various competitions and daily training. A new German-manufactured surface, incorporating the blue and white colors of the Greek flag, is planned to carry World Athletics certification required to stage elite competitions, including Diamond League meetings.

Subsequent phases will include the careful cleaning and restoration of the stadium’s marble surfaces and the installation of a modern lighting system designed to improve conditions for athletes, spectators and television broadcasts while fully respecting the monument’s architectural heritage.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC) said the work is being financed entirely through the Marinakis donation, without state funding. HOC President Isidoros Kouvelos said the initiative represented the first major restoration project undertaken solely with the support of Greek benefactors.

He said the upgrades are intended to enable the Panathenaic Stadium to host a Diamond League athletics meeting in 2027, while reinforcing efforts to preserve one of Greece’s most recognizable sporting landmarks.

Known in Greek as the Kallimarmaro, the Panathenaic Stadium is the only major stadium in the world built entirely of white Pentelic marble, quarried from nearby Mt. Penteli. Originally constructed in antiquity and reconstructed for the inaugural modern Olympic Games in 1896, it remains one of Athens’ most visited historic sites and continues to host ceremonial events and sporting competitions.

The renovation follows broader efforts over the past year to expand the stadium’s role as both a cultural monument and a venue for international events.

The Hellenic Olympic Committee has stressed that the modernization program is intended to balance heritage preservation with contemporary sporting standards, allowing the stadium to attract higher-profile athletics competitions while safeguarding one of the most iconic symbols of the modern Olympic movement.
