Two major Italian publications, National Geographic Italia and Vogue Italia, published two back-to-back separate features lauding the Greek islands in the Cyclades, with Syros occupying a prominent spot.

Titled “Alla scoperta delle Cicladi: un viaggio tra le perle dell’Egeo, da Syros e Naxos fino a Ios” (Discovering the Cyclades: a journey among the pearls of the Aegean, from Syros and Naxos to Ios), National Geographic Italia presents the island as a unique destination compared to other more famous islands.

The elegant, neoclassic architecture of Ermoupoli, the capital of the island, combined with the vibrant cultural life of the island and its quaint, serene pace make it the perfect spot for visitors.

The piece references its rich archaeological heritage, focusing on the landmarks including Vaporia, Miaouli Plaza, the Apollo Theatre and the Agios Nicolaos Church. Special mention is made to a painting by Doménikos Theotokópoulos, most widely known as El Greco at the Church of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos.

Vogue Italia also featured the island, publishing a piece titled “Un weekend in Grecia a Syros e Ios, tra le isole più autentiche e ricche di cultura delle Cicladi” (“A weekend in Greece, in Syros and Ios, among the most authentic and culturally rich islands of the Cyclades”), penned by journalist and Vogue Italia editor Veronica Cristino.

The magazine presents the island as the cultural heart of the Cyclades — an authentic, elegant, human-scale destination removed from the mass and overdeveloped tourism found elsewhere in the island group. The piece highlights the coexistence of history and tradition with contemporary daily life, focusing on the cultural scene in Ermoupoli, the district of Ano Syros, the Apollon Theatre, and the island’s industrial and textile heritage. The feature is accompanied by photographs taken by Cristino during her visit, capturing the island’s architecture, atmosphere and character.

According to the municipality, the two publications underscore the value of targeted familiarization trips and partnerships with credible international media. Officials say such initiatives are steadily strengthening Syros’s position in the European travel market, promoting it as a destination for culture, history, authentic experiences and quality tourism.

Syros deputy mayor for tourism Yannis Voutsinos, said the island’s appearance in two outlets with the international standing of National Geographic and Vogue marked a significant result of the municipality’s systematic campaign to promote the island abroad.

“These features did not come about by chance,” he said. “They are the result of the familiarization trip organized in July and the direct contact journalists had with the place, its people, its history and its culture.”
