US President Donald Trump has made fresh remarks against Ukraine’s leadership, arguing that Volodymyr Zelensky is an obstacle to a deal to end the war.
“I suggest they get a new leader so they can reach a deal,” Trump told reporters at the White House, adding that Zelensky “could have ended the war many times”. He accused the Ukrainian president of undermining global energy stability by continuing strikes on Russian refineries, despite Washington’s warnings not to hit oil infrastructure.
The remarks follow Trump’s agreement with Moscow to release 4.8 million tonnes of Russian diesel onto global markets, a move aimed at easing fuel prices ahead of the US elections.
Zelensky called the deal a “gift to Putin”. He said any easing of sanctions without a clear break from Russian energy is a sign of weakness and lets Russia prolong the war. Despite US pressure, Kyiv has stepped up attacks on refineries over the past 18 months, aiming to cut revenue to Russia’s war machine.
The European Commission distanced itself from the US move. A spokesperson said the EU is well aware of the hidden cost of dependence on Russian hydrocarbons and will press ahead with phasing it out, avoiding indirectly fuelling the Russian invasion. Brussels also repeated its call for a ceasefire that would protect global food supply chains and critical energy infrastructure.
