The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued an emergency weather alert for Sunday, May 25, warning of deteriorating conditions in central and northern Greece, with locally heavy rain and thunderstorms.

According to EMY’s bulletin, the following areas are expected to be affected:

  • Central Greece, Thessaly, and northern Evia — from early afternoon until evening
  • Central Macedonia — from early afternoon until late at night
  • The Sporades — during the evening and overnight hours
  • Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, and the northeastern Aegean — from early evening through the early hours of Monday (May 26)

Kolydas’ Warning
In a post, well-known Greek meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas emphasized “Particular caution is advised on Sunday and Monday in Central and Northern Greece due to the passage of a well-organized frontal system.”
He added that EMY has already indicated that severe weather is likely during this two-day period.

EMY Forecast for Sunday
Weather conditions are expected to shift in western, central, and northern Greece, gradually affecting the entire country with rain and scattered thunderstorms. The phenomena are likely to be intense in areas such as Central Greece, Thessaly, the Sporades, and Macedonia by the afternoon, and in Thrace by the evening.

Elsewhere in the country, skies will be mostly cloudy with local showers and isolated storms.

Improvement is expected in western regions by night.

Meteorological conditions favor the transport of African dust, especially in eastern and southern areas, so yellow skies and a generally repressive atmosphere can be expected.

Winds in the west and north will blow from the north/northwest at 4–6 Beaufort, reaching 7 in the Ionian. In other regions, winds will come from southern directions at 4–5, reaching 6–7 Beaufort in the Aegean.

Temperatures will drop, especially in western, central, and northern Greece, and highs will fall within the following ranges, based on the geographical region:

  • West Greece: 25–27°C
  • Central and north Greece: 28–30°C
  • Eastern Greece islands: 27–30°C
  • Crete: 30–33°C, locally reaching 34°C
