The Greek Community of Melbourne (GCM) has announced the expansion of its educational and cultural program for youth of Greek descent worldwide, following a landmark agreement with the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Initially created to serve the Greek-Australian community, the program will now welcome participants from across the globe, offering young members of the Greek diaspora the opportunity to reconnect with their heritage, language, and culture.

A Personal Journey of Rediscovery

“This is more than just a trip to Greece,” said GCM President Vassilis Papastergiadis. “For many participants, it’s a deeply personal journey. Like Athens wasn’t built in a day, this program took years of persistent dialogue and effort with the Ministry before becoming a reality.”

The initiative has evolved into a transformative experience for diaspora youth, creating a unique space for them to explore their Greek identity and forge meaningful bonds with peers from other countries.

Greek Government Support

Maria Papada, from the Secretariat General for Greeks Abroad and Public Diplomacy at the Foreign Ministry and a long-standing supporter of the initiative, praised Papastergiadis for his vision:
“He inspired this program—an incredible journey that participants are now beginning. It’s important for the Greek state to bring diaspora youth together from all over the world, and I’m truly proud to be part of this effort.”

Strengthening Diaspora Engagement

Beyond cultural enrichment, the program aims to boost long-term engagement with Greek communities worldwide. “Through a deeper understanding of your culture, language, and homeland, you also come to see the value of our diaspora communities,” said Papastergiadis. “Many participants and their families have since become active members of the GCM. The goal is clear: to invest in the next generation of Greek diaspora leaders.”

He added, “Our Greek communities globally can only thrive through the active participation of younger generations. This program fosters that engagement, sparking a genuine interest in every aspect of Hellenism—from language and culture to social and community action. As young people embark on this transformative journey, they’re encouraged not only to experience it but to carry it forward—staying involved in their local Greek communities upon returning home.”

“I wish we had programs like this when I was a student,” Papastergiadis reflected. “Make the most of this opportunity, and when you go back to your countries, become active members of your local Greek communities.”
