The three surviving PAOK supporters injured in the road crash in Romania that killed seven fellow fans are in stable condition, doctors said, offering cautious optimism as recovery continues.
Two of the injured were airlifted to Thessaloniki on Thursday and are being treated at Papageorgiou Hospital, one of northern Greece’s major public medical centers. The third survivor remains hospitalized at a university hospital in Timisoara, Romania.
According to Kostas Fortounis, a senior surgeon at Papageorgiou Hospital, the two patients transferred to Greece are in relatively good condition.
“The main news is that they are in fairly good shape. Their vital signs are stable and within normal limits,” Fortounis said.
The 28-year-old has no significant injuries and, at his own request, was discharged from the hospital so he could attend the funerals of his friends who died in the crash.
The 20-year-old has sustained more serious brain injuries and is being treated in the hospital’s neurosurgery department. Doctors said surgery or intensive care is not required at this stage, but he will need close monitoring in the coming days.
Fortounis said the young man is experiencing peritraumatic amnesia, a common condition following head injuries. He does not remember the crash itself and has difficulty with time and spatial orientation, although he is conscious and aware of himself. He reportedly recalls only fragmented moments, such as his parents visiting him in the hospital in Romania.
Doctors said the condition can last several days and is frequently observed in cases of traumatic brain injury. In addition to physical recovery, the patient may require psychological support, as brain injuries can affect emotional and cognitive functions for days or weeks.
Medical officials said all three injured supporters have passed the immediate danger stage.
Funerals for the seven PAOK fans who lost their lives in the crash began Friday in northern Greece, with additional services scheduled in the coming days.
The accident, which occurred earlier this week in Romania, claimed the lives of seven young Greek supporters who were traveling together to follow their team abroad. The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
