A 76-year-old man has been arrested in Greece following allegations that he set fire to the home of his estranged wife in the area of Anchialos, near Thessaloniki. The incident, which authorities are treating as a case of domestic violence and arson, sparked a police manhunt that concluded with his capture in the region of Phthiotida.
According to reports, the suspect — a Greek national — allegedly assaulted and threatened his 48-year-old estranged wife, who is of Bulgarian origin, on Monday afternoon. The following morning, he reportedly returned to her residence and used a flammable liquid to start a fire, causing damage to the interior of the house and to her personal belongings.
After committing the act, the man fled the scene with his legally owned hunting rifle. Police launched an extensive search and successfully located and arrested him on Tuesday afternoon in Phthiotida. The firearm was also confiscated at the time of arrest.
A case has been filed against him on charges of arson and violation of domestic violence laws. The suspect has been transferred to the appropriate public prosecutor in Thessaloniki for further legal proceedings.
