The City of Athens has launched AthensWay, a new official app designed to bring parking, transportation information and other mobility services together in a single digital platform.
Developed through DAEM S.A., the municipality’s digital services company, AthensWay replaces the previous myAthensPass app while expanding its features and services.
The new platform is available to residents and visitors from Monday, following the transition from myAthensPass on Sunday, when controlled parking was not in operation.
Lazaros Karaoulis, CEO of DAEM S.A., said AthensWay marks “a new era” for daily mobility in the city by creating a single digital tool designed to simplify everyday travel and support mobility.
He said the platform will continue to evolve with new services and features based on residents’ needs and the municipality’s plans for a modern and sustainable capital.
More options for controlled parking
AthensWay allows drivers to purchase time for controlled parking directly through the app.
After confirming that they are parked in a designated controlled-parking zone, identified by specific signage, users can:
- Confirm through the app that they are in a controlled-parking zone.
- Enter their vehicle’s license plate number.
- Select parking time from 30 to 180 minutes and see the total cost before confirming.
- Add funds to their electronic wallet using a bank card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Activate a parking ticket without having to separately add funds to the e-wallet first.
The app also allows users to:
- Receive notifications before their parking time expires.
- Extend their parking time remotely.
- Register multiple license plates and activate tickets for different vehicles.
- Pre-purchase a parking ticket for the next day or the next period when the system is operating.
- Check the days and hours when controlled parking is in effect.
- View their transaction history and digital receipts.
AthensWay also automatically checks whether controlled parking hours are currently in effect and informs users accordingly.
Live parking availability at Kotzia Square
For the first time, users can see real-time availability at the municipal underground parking garage at Kotzia Square, including the number of available spaces and the garage’s occupancy rate.
The feature is designed to give drivers information before they arrive and reduce the time spent searching for a parking space.
Real-time bus information
The app also provides real-time information on buses operated by OASA, Athens’ public transportation organization.
Users can view the full list of routes and schedules, check estimated arrival times, track buses live on a map, save favorite routes and view available routes and stops.
Other mobility services
AthensWay also includes several additional services, including:
- A simplified system for submitting reports about road safety issues by selecting the relevant category.
- Locations of electric vehicle charging stations, with navigation options.
- Locations where parking tickets can be purchased.
- Municipal underground parking facilities.
- Frequently asked questions and a dedicated “How to Park” section.
- Useful telephone numbers.
- Announcements, news, short polls and information messages from the City of Athens.
- Parking tickets still available in physical locations
Drivers can continue to purchase parking time from participating physical sales points, such as kiosks, which carry special signage.
Tickets can be activated immediately using cash or a card, or purchased in advance for the next day or the next period when the controlled-parking system is operating.
Drivers can also extend their parking time through these locations by providing their vehicle’s license plate number.
What happens to myAthensPass accounts
Existing myAthensPass users will be transferred to AthensWay automatically and securely.
Their user profile will be transferred, their existing e-wallet balance will remain active and their parking-ticket history will be preserved.
Users should sign in to AthensWay using the same email address they used for myAthensPass. They will then have access to their profile, e-wallet balance and parking-ticket history without creating a new account.
For security reasons, users will need to enter their bank card details again the first time they add funds to the e-wallet.
When they first log in to AthensWay, users will also receive a brief overview of the app’s new features and will be asked to accept the updated terms of use.
How controlled parking works in Athens
Athens’ controlled-parking system is designed to manage parking in the city’s most heavily used areas, increasing the availability of spaces for residents and visitors and supporting sustainable mobility.
The system covers 11 controlled-parking zones for visitors.
It operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. No parking fee is charged on Sundays or official public holidays.
Parking periods range from 30 to 180 minutes, with charges depending on the length of stay.
Vehicles displaying a disability permit can park free of charge in visitor spaces at all times. Electric vehicles can also park free of charge, with a maximum parking time of 180 minutes.
AthensWay is available free of charge through the App Store and Google Play.
The project is being implemented as part of Greece’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, “Greece 2.0,” with funding from the European Union’s NextGenerationEU program.
