The Greek tourism industry has welcomed the European Union’s first Sustainable Tourism Strategy, describing it as an opportunity for Greece to help shape the future of tourism across Europe.

The strategy was presented by the European Commission at the European Parliament under the responsibility of European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

The Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE), which represents tourism businesses in Greece, said the initiative establishes a comprehensive strategic framework for the sector at the European level for the first time. It also recognizes tourism’s importance to the economy, employment, regional development and social cohesion.

SETE described the strategy as an important step toward a more coordinated European tourism policy.

Strategy sets priorities for the tourism sector

The new framework introduces specific initiatives and timelines and provides for private-sector participation in its governance.

It also highlights priorities that SETE has long advocated, including skills development, strengthening the tourism workforce, digital transformation, infrastructure investment, effective destination management and improving business competitiveness.

Particular emphasis is placed on ensuring that the benefits of tourism are distributed fairly among local communities.

SETE said Greece, as one of Europe’s most developed tourism destinations, has significant experience and expertise that could contribute substantially to implementing the strategy.

SETE pledges active role in implementation

SETE President Agapi Sbokou said the strategy marked a milestone in recognizing tourism’s strategic importance to Europe, but stressed that its impact would depend on how it is implemented.

“The next important step is its implementation, with tangible benefits for businesses, tourism workers and local communities,” she said.

Sbokou added that Greece had the knowledge and experience to contribute actively to the effort.

“SETE, INSETE and Marketing Greece are ready to participate, putting forward evidence-based positions and taking an active role in shaping European tourism in the years ahead,” she said.
