A shark was spotted swimming just off the coast of Amfilochia in western Greece on Tuesday night, in a rare sighting captured on video by a group of middle school students.
The footage shows the animal moving parallel to the shoreline and making several turns, with its fin and silhouette clearly visible in the light from the beach.
Although marine biologists have not yet officially identified the species, the shark’s physical characteristics suggest it may be a sandbar shark (Carcharhinus plumbeus). However, the nighttime recording conditions make a definitive identification difficult.
The presence of shark species in the Ambracian Gulf, where Amfilochia is located, is already documented. According to environmental organization iSea, both sandbar sharks and dusky sharks have been recorded in the area.
