The footage captures the moment a student’s jacket catches fire, while screams can be heard as panic spreads among those present. Dozens of individuals wearing helmets and carrying clubs are also seen.

Three people were injured in the incident and taken to a nearby hospital. Two reportedly sustained injuries to their lower limbs from beatings, while a third was injured by a firebomb. Other accounts also referred to burns and a leg injury allegedly caused by an axe.

The attack took place inside the department of mathematics building during a scheduled general assembly of the Mathematics Students’ Association, ahead of events marking the anniversary of the 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising.

Student representatives alleged that the attack was intended to disrupt preparations for the anniversary commemorations and intimidate participants. The identities and motives of those involved have not been conclusively established.

The education ministry has called on the university’s rectorate to provide explanations over the incident.
