A 19-year-old British tourist remained in critical but stable condition in an Athens hospital on Wednesday after suffering a severe head injury in an ATV crash while on vacation on the Ionian island of Zakynthos.

Louis Benson sustained serious traumatic brain injuries in the accident, which occurred in the early hours of June 12 while he was riding a quad bike. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was airlifted from Zakynthos to Athens and transferred to the Attikon University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remains hospitalized.

According to his mother, Olinda Olexievich, Benson had traveled to Zakynthos with friends on what was his first holiday without family. Following the crash, he was diagnosed with a brain hemorrhage and placed in an induced coma. She arrived in Athens on June 13 and launched an online fundraising campaign after revealing that her son did not have travel insurance, with the family facing significant medical and travel expenses. British media reported that the appeal has raised tens of thousands of British pounds.

In recent updates, his mother said doctors are closely monitoring his condition and plan to gradually reduce sedation in the coming days to assess his neurological response. She also reported that Benson appeared to react by moving his head when relatives spoke to him, offering encouragement to family members hoping for signs of improvement.

The crash has renewed attention on the safety of rental quad bikes on Greek tourist islands. The issue has been the subject of recurring debate following a series of serious accidents involving foreign visitors, including a fatal crash involving a British tourist on Corfu last month. Road-safety experts have called for stricter regulation and specialized licensing requirements for ATV users.

British tabloid coverage, particularly in The Sun, has focused heavily on the family’s fundraising effort, Benson’s lack of travel insurance and the emotional impact on relatives, emphasizing that this was his first trip abroad without his family.
