Greece is preparing for a fresh wave of hot weather as the first weekend of July approaches, with meteorologists warning of a new “heat incursion” set to impact the country from Friday through Monday.
After a period of intense winds and rising temperatures, Monday brings a continuation of high-pressure conditions. Northern winds will dominate much of the country today, particularly in the Aegean Sea, where gusts will range from 5 to 7 on the Beaufort scale, and may even reach up to 8 in the southern islands. These winds are expected to ease gradually by evening.
Temperatures across mainland Greece will climb to between 32°C and 35°C during the day, with western parts of the country seeing highs of up to 37°C. In the capital, Athens, the mercury will reach around 33°C, while Thessaloniki in the north is forecast to top out at 32°C. The islands of the Aegean will remain slightly cooler, with maximum temperatures of 29°C to 32°C, although the Dodecanese islands—including Rhodes—will feel the heat more intensely, peaking at around 36°C.
By midweek, on Wednesday and Thursday, a modest dip in temperature is expected, with daytime highs hovering between 33°C and 34°C. However, this respite will be short-lived.
According to Nikos Kanteres, a new heatwave is expected to arrive over the weekend. Writing on social media, he described the start of July as “typical summer heat,” adding that “a heat incursion is forecast for the first weekend of the month and into Monday, though it may not last long.”
Kantere also characterized June as relatively mild compared to previous years, with more moderate temperatures overall.
Wind Gusts Reach Storm Levels
Wind gusts on Monday have reached storm-force levels in several parts of the country. Recorded gusts include:
- Tinos: 119 km/h
- Penteli (near Athens): 118 km/h
- Crete: 92 km/h
High winds will persist throughout the Aegean in the coming hours, particularly affecting:
- Cyclades: 8–9 Beaufort
- Dodecanese: 8–9 Beaufort
- Crete: 8–9 Beaufort, locally up to 10 Beaufort
- Attica (Athens region): 7 Beaufort
What Travelers Should Know
For visitors to Greece, the upcoming weekend may bring extreme heat, especially in inland and western regions. Travelers should stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, and monitor local forecasts if planning to visit islands where strong winds might impact ferry services or beach conditions.
