A 16-year-old girl who was seriously injured in a road accident in Athens has been taken off life support and is showing encouraging signs of recovery, hospital officials said.
The teenager, who had been treated in the intensive care unit of a major Athens hospital, is now breathing independently, recognizes her parents, and is able to move her limbs—developments doctors describe as particularly significant for her condition.
Signs of Recovery After Critical Days
The girl was removed from a ventilator on the evening of April 21 after several days in intensive care. Medical staff continue to closely monitor her progress, expressing cautious optimism about her recovery.
Despite the positive developments, doctors note that she still faces a long rehabilitation process and ongoing medical care.
Investigation Into the Crash
The accident occurred when the teenager was struck by a motorcycle on a central Athens road. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident, including witness statements and testimony from those involved.
According to the driver, there was no pedestrian crossing at the scene and the girl suddenly stepped into the road. He said he attempted to brake but was unable to avoid the collision.
The driver later turned himself in to police and is now facing felony charges, including dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident that endangered life, and driving without a license.
Background of Those Involved
Investigators have also examined the background of individuals connected to the case. Reports indicate prior involvement of some in criminal activities, including drug-related offenses, which are now part of the broader inquiry.
Statements from those involved describe the moments leading up to the crash, with one individual saying the motorcycle was traveling at around 60 km/h and that both riders were wearing helmets.
Authorities are continuing to gather evidence as they work to determine the full circumstances of the incident.
