One of the largest police operations in recent years is underway on the Greek island of Crete, with authorities targeting alleged criminal groups suspected of involvement in drug trafficking and other activities uncovered during a months-long investigation.

The operation began before dawn on Thursday, when nearly 200 police officers launched simultaneous raids at homes and livestock facilities across several areas of the island.

According to investigators, the primary focus of the operation is on criminal networks allegedly involved in the distribution of narcotics. The case has reportedly been under investigation for several months, with authorities gathering evidence through extensive surveillance and intelligence work.

Police conducted 22 searches under strict secrecy and heightened security measures designed to prevent information leaks, the destruction of evidence or the escape of suspects.

However, the investigation has expanded beyond drug-related allegations. Information gathered during the surveillance phase reportedly included conversations linked to livestock declarations and upcoming inspections by Greece’s agricultural subsidy payment agency, raising additional questions that authorities are now examining.

The operation remains ongoing, and officials are continuing to process evidence collected during the raids.

So far, 15 people have been arrested, while further seizures and official announcements from the police are expected in the coming hours as the investigation progresses.
