Authorities have detained eight individuals in connection with an armed bank robbery carried out Monday morning in the town of Tithorea, in Fthiotida prefecture of south-central Greece.
According to police officials, six men and two women were taken to police headquarters in Athens where they are being questioned over their alleged involvement in the robbery as well as possible links to other armed heists.
Police investigators said a cache of heavy weaponry has already been discovered during the ongoing operation, although officials have not yet released further details regarding the type of firearms recovered or the extent of the suspects’ alleged criminal activity.
The robbery took place earlier Monday at a bank branch in Tithorea, a small town located at the foot of Mount Parnassus about 150 kilometers north-northwest of Athens, along one of the main road and rail corridors connecting southern and northern Greece.
Police said additional information is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
