A retaining wall collapsed early on Monday morning at a construction site in the Toumba area of Thessaloniki, northern Greece, causing a section of roadway to give way and leaving parked vehicles in a precarious position.
According to local reports, the incident occurred at a site known as the “Stavroi Papafi” works, when the wall supporting the excavation area suddenly failed along a nearby street. The collapse led to the partial subsidence of the road surface.
Preliminary information suggests the damage may have been triggered by a burst water pipe during ongoing works to install fiber-optic cables in the area.
Vehicles left hanging above excavation
As a result of the road collapse, several parked cars along the edge of the street were left partially suspended over the void. One vehicle reportedly fell into the construction site below.
Residents described hearing construction noise earlier in the morning, followed by an abrupt stop. One local witness said that when they checked outside, the retaining wall had already collapsed. The same witness added that the car fell into the excavation some time after the initial subsidence.
