Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to New York to chair a high-level open debate of the United Nations Security Council on Thursday as part of Greece’s October presidency of the body.
The high-level open debate of the Security Council under the agenda item “Maintenance of international peace and security” will focus on maritime security and the role of emerging technologies in tackling international threats.
Technology and Security
The meeting is the centerpiece of Greece’s October presidency of the Security Council.
According to Greece’s presentation of its priorities at the United Nations, the debate will examine how the responsible use of emerging technologies can strengthen capabilities to address threats to peace and security, with a particular focus on the maritime domain and with respect for international law and the UN Charter.
The choice of topic is linked to one of Greece’s key priorities during its tenure on the Security Council: freedom of navigation and maritime security, based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Greece’s Security Council Presidency
The Security Council is the UN body with primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. It consists of 15 countries: five permanent members with veto power and 10 elected members serving two-year terms.
Greece is serving as an elected member through the end of 2026 and holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month. It is in this institutional capacity that Mitsotakis will chair the meeting.
Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis will also participate in the meeting. He is in New York for the proceedings of Greece’s Security Council presidency.
Mitsotakis’ schedule for Friday also includes an online discussion with Bastian Giegerich, director-general and chief executive of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). The discussion will take place as part of the IISS Manama Dialogue 2026, held in Bahrain.
