Μake us preferred on Google West Nile virus infections continue to increase in Greece, with the National Public Health Organization (EODY) reporting 23 new locally transmitted cases over the past week.
Since the start of the 2026 surveillance period through August 5, a total of 65 locally acquired cases have been confirmed. Of these, 54 patients developed severe neurological complications involving the central nervous system, including encephalitis, meningitis or acute flaccid paralysis, while the remaining 11 experienced mild symptoms or no neurological manifestations.
23 new infections were diagnosed or reported, during the last week. The virus has so far claimed six lives, all involving patients over the age of 65 who developed central nervous system complications. A total of 20 patients are currently hospitalized, including eight in intensive care units and four in high-dependency units.
So far this year, West Nile virus cases have been recorded and investigated in 25 municipalities across 10 regional units in the regions of Attica, Thessaly and Central Macedonia. The affected regional units include East Attica, North Athens, West Attica, Central Athens, South Athens, Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala, Pella and Serres.
The Public Health Organization warned that additional cases are expected in the coming weeks, both in areas already affected and in new locations that cannot yet be predicted. The agency noted that Attica has experienced particularly intense virus circulation this year, with a notably higher number of infections concentrated in specific parts of the region.
