The Greek National Basketball Team is preparing for a demanding journey to qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup, set to take place in Doha in August 2027. The path to qualification includes six “windows” of games — both home and away — stretching from November 2025 to March 2027.
Under the guidance of head coach Vassilis Spanoulis, the national team is seeking a return to form on the international stage.
Before that, however, the immediate focus is on EuroBasket 2025, where Greece is expected to be strengthened by the return of NBA superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Giannis Antetokounmpo Set to Suit Up for Greece
Having wrapped up his season in the NBA, Antetokounmpo has turned his attention to national duty. In a recent appearance on the show hosted by his brother Thanasis, Giannis shared his passion for playing for the Greek national team: “I love playing in New York, it brings out the best in me, and I love playing for Greece and representing my country.”
His commitment has reignited excitement among fans and added momentum to the team’s EuroBasket campaign.
Road to the World Cup: Six-Window Qualification System
The qualifiers for European teams will be held over six international windows, beginning in November 2025. Here’s how the schedule currently looks for Greece:
- November 27, 2025: Greece opens its campaign at home against the winner of the pre-qualifiers.
- November 30, 2025: Greece travels to face Portugal.
- In the second window, Greece faces Montenegro in a two-game series — one at home and one away.
- The first qualifying phase concludes in early July 2026, with the final game once again against Portugal.
If Greece finishes among the top three teams in its group, it will move on to the second round, where it will be grouped with the top three teams from another group — which includes strong contenders like Spain and Georgia.
From that new group, the top three teams will secure their ticket to the 2027 World Cup in Doha.
