The May 2021 murder of 20-year-old Caroline Crouch in Glyka Nera, a suburb of Athens, became one of the most closely followed cases in Greece in recent years. An initial account of a violent home invasion, the public image of her husband as a victim, and a stunning reversal weeks later kept the story in the headlines.
Now, the documentary “The Fitbit Killer” returns to May 11, 2021, when Caroline was found dead in her home. Her husband, Babis Anagnostopoulos, initially claimed that three armed men, likely migrants, had broken into the couple’s maisonette, killed the family dog, and then attacked Caroline.
That account began to unravel as the investigation progressed. Evidence exposed serious contradictions in the robbery story, and data from digital devices proved especially important. The documentary focuses on precisely this, examining how information from everyday devices, including a Fitbit, helped investigators reconstruct the events and dismantle Anagnostopoulos’s version.

In June 2021, just weeks after the crime, Anagnostopoulos confessed to killing Caroline and the family dog. Until then, he had appeared in public as a grieving husband helping authorities hunt for the supposed attackers.
In May 2022, he was convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 11 years and six months for other offenses, including killing the dog and misleading the authorities. At trial, he maintained that the killing happened during a heated argument, but the forensic examination described a prolonged assault, contradicting his account.
The case drew enormous attention abroad and especially in the British media as Caroline Crouch was a Greek-raised young woman of mixed British and Filipino heritage. She was the daughter of retired engineer David Crouch thus holding British citizenship. Caroline grew up on the Greek island of Alonissos, and she was buried there in front of hundreds of mourners from the island, whose residents had adopted the young Briton as their own.
Her death remained in the spotlight for long not only because of the brutality of the crime but also for the attempt to disguise it as a random robbery. “The Fitbit Killer” revisits the story through that shift: from the tale of unknown intruders to the data that revealed what really happened inside the house.
