The large island of Crete is at the center of a new spell of severe weather, with heavy rain and thunderstorms expected to continue through Sunday as the island recovers from a damaging storm earlier this week.

Authorities have issued an emergency alert as the latest weather system is forecast to intensify, bringing thunderstorms and further heavy rainfall. The most intense conditions are expected through Saturday evening across northern, mountainous and semi-mountainous areas.

On Sunday, rain and localized thunderstorms are forecast intermittently through midday, before gradually weakening.

Nearly 500 millimeters of rain fell in Anogeia between Wednesday afternoon and Friday midday, with the amounts described as extreme for northern Crete. The rainfall has been compared with levels recorded during Storm Daniel, the devastating weather system that caused widespread flooding in Greece in September 2023.

The latest rainfall follows severe storms that caused extensive flooding in northern Crete, with rivers and streams overflowing, landslides reported and roads damaged. The Mylopotamos municipality was placed under a state of emergency after the storm, while at least one person died after being swept away by floodwaters.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are also expected later Saturday in parts of the Dodecanese, including Rhodes.

The new spell of unsettled weather follows a succession of rain and storm systems across Greece during the past week, marking a distinctly more autumnal pattern after a prolonged period of relatively dry conditions.
