A 32-year-old man broke into his former partner’s home in Lavrio, southeastern Attica, and stabbing both her and her current partner in a violent attack early Friday.
The man, a Romanian national, had previously been reported by the woman five times since November 27, 2025, in connection with incidents including domestic threats, failure to meet child-support obligations and violations involving personal data.
A panic button had also been provided to the woman following the first reported incident.
Suspect had been arrested a month earlier
The man had been arrested on September 3, about a month before the latest attack, over domestic threat and a violation of weapons legislation.
During that incident, authorities reportedly found a 22-centimeter cutting tool and a rod in his possession.
The latest attack took place at about 12:15 a.m. in the Kavodokanos area of Lavrio.
According to preliminary information, the man climbed onto the balcony of the home where his former partner was with her current boyfriend. He broke the glass of the balcony door with a sledgehammer before entering the residence.
He then attacked both with a knife.
The 32-year-old woman suffered injuries to her back, lung and upper limbs, while her 33-year-old partner sustained injuries to his collarbone, ribs and genital area.
Both victims in serious condition
The two injured people were taken by ambulance to Asklipiio Voula Hospital. Because of the severity of her condition, the woman was subsequently transferred to Evangelismos Hospital, while the 33-year-old remained hospitalized at Asklipiio Voula.
The condition of both victims was described as serious.
Two young children were asleep inside
The woman’s two young sons, who are also the suspect’s children, were inside the home during the attack. The boys, aged 2½ and 1½, were asleep as the assault took place.
The woman and the suspect had previously entered into a civil partnership.
After the attack, the 32-year-old man voluntarily turned himself in at the Lavreotiki Police Department.
The Lavreotiki Department for the Investigation and Detection of Crimes has filed a case against him on suspicion of attempted homicide.
What is Greece’s Panic Button?
Greece’s Panic Button is a smartphone application designed to allow victims of domestic violence to alert police quickly and discreetly when they face a serious threat to their life or physical safety.
The program began operating on a pilot basis in Attica and Thessaloniki in March 2023, initially for women who were victims of domestic violence. By December 2023, the government announced plans to expand the service to other parts of the country. In June 2024, the application was extended nationwide and made available to all adult victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender.
The application is provided through police departments and the network of counseling centers supporting victims of violence. Once installed, it can be activated from the victim’s phone with the press of a button. The alert is designed to be silent, so the person posing the threat does not necessarily know that the victim has contacted police. The system sends an alert to the police, reducing the time needed for authorities to become aware of an emergency.
The service has seen growing use. In 2024, 5,817 victims installed the application and it was activated 841 times, according to figures released by the Ministry of Citizen Protection. Police said activations increased substantially compared with 2023.
There have also been recent cases in which the application was used during an active threat. In August 2025, a 30-year-old woman in Patras activated her Panic Button while locked inside her car as her former husband followed her and struck the vehicle’s window. Police arrived and arrested the man.
