An explosion occurred early Friday morning at a taverna in Marousi, a northern suburb of Athens, leaving two women injured and hospitalized with burns.
Emergency services responded promptly to the incident, with police quickly securing the area. The injured individuals, both employees of the establishment, were transported to the “Gennimatas” hospital for treatment. Their condition is currently being monitored.
Initial reports suggest that the blast may have been caused by a propane gas cylinder. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause, but investigations are ongoing.
An eyewitness described the moment of the explosion to Greek broadcaster MEGA: “Around six in the morning, as usual, the owner came to prepare the restaurant, turning on the machines and opening the gas lines,” the witness recounted. “Then I heard a terrifying noise, very loud, and heard the voices of the woman and the girls who were inside.”
According to the same witness, the staff attempted to extinguish the fire using a water hose. “Fortunately, they weren’t seriously injured,” he added, noting that the shockwave from the explosion was powerful.
