Locals in the working-class suburb of Menidi, located north of Athens, woke up to sirens today after a passerby contacted police to inform them that the body of a dead woman was in the middle of the street.

The woman is estimated to be 40 years of age, and while not much more information is available at this time, reports at MEGA TV say that the woman appears to have been stabbed to death and that a knife has been found at the scene.

Police and an ambulance rushed to the scene, which has since been cordoned off, and is now being examined by criminal investigators.

Greek media is following the shocking case closely, which comes a little over a month after another woman was stabbed in Athens just outside of a police station.

Authorities and the public have been concerned with the increase in domestic violence and femicides in the country over the past few years.
