More and more consumers, professionals and businesses in Greece, are using IRIS for everyday payments, with seven in 10 transactions made using the instant payment method.
Approximately 12.4 million transactions, worth 4.76 billion euros, including intra-bank (“on-us”) transfers, were processed via IRIS Payments in 2025, according to a whitepaper released by DIAS Interbanking Systems and Capgemini Invent.
The number of IRIS P2P (person to person) users rose from 500,000 at the start of 2020 to 4.27 million by the end of 2025 and currently stand at 4.75 million.
IRIS P2Pro (Person-to-Professional) is approaching 600,000 registered professionals. The service is accepted across roughly 1.2 million POS terminals and 70,000 online stores across the country.

According to the study, “Scaling Account-Based Payments in Europe: The IRIS Case”, interbank transactions increased from 1.6 million in 2020 to 95.4 million in 2025, marking a 60-fold increase over five years. IRIS Payments now accounts for approximately 70% of instant payment volume in Greece.
The study traces the development of IRIS Payments since its introduction in 2016. In 2021, DIAS shifted its focus from technical availability to broader commercial expansion, establishing the unified “IRIS Payments” identity and introducing zero-fee policies for retail customers.
“In 2021, we set a clear goal: to transform IRIS from a technically available interbank service into a payment tool that we all use in our daily lives,” said Stavroula Kambouridou, CEO of DIAS S.A.
Since June 2026, IRIS P2P, through its participation in EuroPA, has enabled cross-border instant payments using mobile phone numbers between participating services in Greece, Portugal, Italy, Spain and Andorra. The first phase connects more than 57 million users.
According to the whitepaper, the next step is turning broad availability into active preference, particularly at physical points of sale, through fewer checkout steps, greater consistency across banking apps and clearer visibility of IRIS Payments.
Earlier this year, transfer limits for IRIS transactions increased for both individual users and professionals.
