A major wildfire continues to burn in the Ierapetra region of Crete, with emergency services engaged in a large-scale firefighting effort to contain the blaze and protect lives, property, and the surrounding environment.
Firefighting Forces Stretched Across Multiple Fronts
The fire, which has been active since early Thursday, is affecting a wide area from Agia Fotia to Ferma. With multiple active fronts, the firefighting effort has been significantly reinforced. According to the Hellenic Fire Service, a total of 230 firefighters, 13 ground teams, 46 fire engines, and 10 helicopters have been deployed. A drone team is also operating in the area to assist with aerial surveillance and coordination.

Command of the operation has been assumed by the Deputy Chief of the Fire Service, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. Firefighters from the capital region of Attica have also been brought in to support local crews.
Evacuations and Public Alerts
Due to the fast-moving flames and flare-ups near populated areas, an emergency alert was issued via the 112 system, urging residents of Ferma, Katharades, Koutsounari, and Kakia Skala to evacuate immediately and follow authorities’ instructions.

Winds of up to 9 on the Beaufort scale are making firefighting extremely difficult, continuously reigniting the fire and creating new flare-ups. The steep and rugged terrain in the area has further complicated ground efforts.
Road Closures and Air Support
Local authorities have announced that the road connecting Ierapetra to Ferma and Koutsounari is now closed, and citizens are being urged to avoid unnecessary movement. This is both to ensure their safety and to allow fire crews unobstructed access to the affected zones.

As daylight broke, aerial firefighting resumed, targeting three main fronts with continuous water drops from the air. Despite the challenging weather conditions, firefighters continue their efforts to prevent the fire from reaching residential areas.
The wildfire in Ierapetra remains an active and dangerous emergency, with operations continuing across land and air. Residents are advised to monitor official announcements and stay clear of evacuation zones
Situation Elsewhere in Greece
While Ierapetra remains a top priority, the Fire Service has also reported progress in the firefighting efforts in Vourvourou, in the Halkidiki region of northern Greece. There, strong fire lines have been contained following the deployment of 160 firefighters, seven forest operations teams, 49 engines, volunteers, and support from local authorities.
