A domestic violence incident in the Gyzi neighborhood of Athens left a woman seriously injured and her husband dead in what authorities are treating as an apparent suicide.

According to initial reports, the altercation took place in the couple’s basement apartment. During a dispute, the man allegedly grabbed a knife and attacked his wife, inflicting a serious neck injury. The woman, believed to be around 60 years old, was immediately transported to Gennimatas Hospital, where she received urgent medical care.

Following the attack, the man reportedly went up to the building’s rooftop and attempted to jump to a neighboring apartment block. He fell into the void and sustained fatal injuries.

Police sources say a handwritten note was found at the scene, addressed to a close relative, in which the man reportedly wrote “I can’t take it anymore”, referring to the situation he was experiencing. The knife believed to have been used in the attack was also reportedly found near the man.

The area has been cordoned off as police continue to collect witness statements from neighbors and investigate the exact circumstances of the incident.
