In today’s match, Gibson started strong and, with early breaks, led 4-0 in the first set. Sakkari cut the gap to 4-1, but the Australian won the next two games and took the set 6-1, making the first step toward a spot in the semifinals.
In the second set, the Greek player broke serve in the first game and went up 3-1. In the 10th game, Gibson had two chances to break back, but Sakkari stayed calm, turned the situation around, and won the set 6-4 to level the match at 1-1.
The third set featured a string of breaks, with Gibson leading 4-1. Sakkari was unable to respond, and the Australian broke again in the eighth game to close out the set 6-2, securing the 2-1 win and a place in the next round.
Gibson continues her run in Singapore, while Sakkari leaves Singapore for Beijing and the WTA 1000 China Open, scheduled for September 30 to October 11.
