Two well-frequented beaches near Athens were removed from the Blue Flag list for 2025, following failures to meet the international program’s criteria for cleanliness, safety, and organization.

Karavi Beach in Schinias (Municipality of Marathon) and the 1st Port of Daskaleio Keratea – Solo Pino (Municipality of Lavreotiki) no longer meet the standards set by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), which oversees the Blue Flag certification. The program assesses beaches based on water quality, waste management, lifeguard presence, accessibility, environmental education, and other infrastructure.

Karavi, located in the Schinias National Park, is known for its sandy coast, shallow waters, and pine forest backdrop. It is a common destination for families and water sports, particularly windsurfing. Daskaleio includes three small ports, two of which are organized beaches with basic facilities. The first port, now delisted, had become increasingly popular in recent years.

The removal signals potential environmental degradation, pollution risks, or administrative lapses. Local residents and tourism stakeholders have expressed concern, particularly ahead of the summer season.

Despite the setbacks, Attica still maintains 15 beaches that retain the Blue Flag designation for 2025. These are spread across Eastern Attica, the southern suburbs of Athens, and the Saronic Islands:

Eastern Attica:

  • Brexiza (Municipality of Marathon): A smaller, organized beach in the Nea Makri area.

  • Intersection and Lake (Municipality of Spata-Artemidos): Urban beaches located near Artemida, serving local residents and summer visitors.

  • Avlaki (Municipality of Markopoulo): Known for its clear waters and relatively calm conditions, frequently used by swimmers and small families.

  • Lagonisi 1 (Grand Beach), Lagonisi 2 (Mediterraneo), Lagonisi 3 (Kochylia), Mavro Lithari (EverEden Beach) (Municipality of Saronic Gulf): A cluster of organized beaches, several affiliated with resorts, offering a range of facilities. EverEden Beach has consistently retained its flag for nearly two decades.

Southern Suburbs of Athens:

  • Astir Beach (Vouliagmeni): A private beach club with high standards, often frequented by tourists and locals alike.

  • Voula A and Vouliagmeni: Publicly accessible but well-maintained beaches with amenities and lifeguard services.

  • Glyfada, Glyfada A, Glyfada B (Municipality of Glyfada): A stretch of popular beaches, partly organized, close to the city center and easily reachable via public transport.

Saronic Islands:

  • Agia Marina (Municipality of Aegina): One of Aegina’s main beach areas, with sandy shores and clear waters, often visited by day-trippers from Athens.
