Domestic trips accounted for 85% of all trips in Greece in 2025, among the highest shares in the European Union, according to figures released by Eurostat. Only Romania (89%) and Spain (87%) recorded higher shares, while France and Portugal matched Greece at 85%.

Across the bloc, EU residents made 1.20 billion personal and business trips in 2025, up 1.4% on 2024 (17 million more). Of these, 848 million were domestic (70%) and 264 million were to another EU country (22%), meaning 92% of all trips stayed within the EU. The remaining 8% were to destinations outside the EU, fewer than half of them outside Europe.

Luxembourg had the lowest share of domestic trips at 5%, followed by Belgium (29%) and Malta (32%).

Spending told a different story. Although domestic trips outnumbered trips abroad, EU residents spent more on travelling abroad: €379.4 billion, against €266.2 billion on domestic trips.

On domestic trips, accommodation (34%, €90.3 billion) and transport (21%, €56.0 billion) accounted for more than half of spending. On trips abroad, residents spent more on both: accommodation (35%, €131.3 billion) and transport (32%, €121.5 billion).
