Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty presented the Key to the City to Greek American business leader and philanthropist Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, recognizing his decades of service and contributions to California’s capital.

The ceremony celebrated Tsakopoulos’s 90th birthday and marked 75 years since he arrived in the United States as a 15 year old immigrant from Rizes, a village in the Tegea region of Arcadia, Greece.

“From building over 40,000 homes to donating resources for schools, libraries, museums and hospitals, Angelo Tsakopoulos has shaped Sacramento for the better,” Mayor McCarty said.

Tsakopoulos’s life reflects a distinctly Greek American story of immigration, entrepreneurship and civic responsibility. After settling in California, he entered the real estate industry and went on to establish AKT Investments, a family owned real estate investment and development company headquartered in Sacramento. The company has developed tens of thousands of homes as well as millions of square feet of commercial space across Northern and Central California.

Beyond his business career, Tsakopoulos and his wife, Sofia, have supported educational, cultural, and health care institutions throughout the Sacramento region. Their philanthropy has included assistance to schools, hospitals, museums, libraries and arts organizations.

Their commitment to preserving and advancing Hellenic culture is reflected in the Tsakopoulos Hellenic Collection at California State University, Sacramento. The collection contains more than 83,000 volumes, together with archival materials, rare books, works of art and other resources relating to Greece, Cyprus and the broader Hellenic world. It is regarded as one of the most significant collections of its kind in the western United States.

The presentation of the Key to the City recognizes not only Tsakopoulos’s contribution to Sacramento, but also the enduring role of Greek immigrants and Greek Americans in the civic, economic and cultural life of the United States.
