Μake us preferred on Google New opportunities for work and permanent settlement in Greece‘s regions are the focus of this week’s post by Thanasis Kontogeorgis, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister. He highlights a series of projects stretching from Thessaly to Kastellorizo and from Drama to Amorgos.
He singles out a new program from the Public Employment Service (DYPA) that offers fully remote jobs to unemployed people living in mountainous and remote areas. The program will subsidize 90% of their salary and social security contributions for one year. He also points to the reimbursement of two months’ rent to 17,074 teachers, doctors and nurses serving in the regions.
On Kastellorizo, discussions are already underway on a new model that links relocation incentives, housing for public servants and remote work options, with the aim of making permanent life on the remote island more viable. In Thessaly, meanwhile, 799 new farmers and ranchers are joining the “Young Farmers’ Settlement” program, part of an effort to keep young people working in agriculture.
Kontogeorgis also cites the partnership between the Public Power Corporation (PPC) and Amazon Web Services to develop a 300 MW data center in Western Macedonia. The project, he notes, “adds a new dimension to the productive transformation of a region in transition.”
He places particular emphasis on funding for two new National Marine Parks in the Ionian Sea and the Southern Aegean, linking environmental protection with the future of Greece’s island communities. The parks will cover two major marine ecosystems, with satellite offices planned on Kythera, Milos and Amorgos.
“Growth, however, has value only when it goes hand in hand with social cohesion,” Kontogeorgis says, drawing attention to a new Second Chance School at the Nikiforos Detention Facility in Drama.
In Katerini, the International Hellenic University is launching a new undergraduate program in Shipping and Intermodal Transportation Management. And in the Peloponnese, a 3.5 million euros initiative is being rolled out to help people with disabilities and citizens over 65 who face the risk of poverty or social exclusion take part in sports, cultural and recreational activities.
