Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is in the United States for the UN General Assembly, held separate meetings with Citi CEO Jane Fraser and Bank of America President for International Bernard Mensah, along with senior executives from both financial institutions. The executives expressed strong appreciation for the achievements of the Greek economy and of Greece more broadly.
Mitsotakis reiterated that prudent fiscal policy remains an absolute priority, describing it as the foundation for generating surpluses and enabling a rapid reduction of public debt.
The benefits of that policy are clearly visible, he said, noting that Greek bond prices had been affected relatively less during the recent crisis. He pointed in particular to the fact that Greece’s borrowing costs are now lower than those of four G7 countries: the United States, Britain, France and Italy.
The discussions focused in particular on challenges in the energy market and on the Greek government’s initiatives at the European level to curb rising fuel prices for consumers, especially heating oil.
The talks also covered investment in Greece in renewable energy and industry, as well as the development of data centers, with emphasis on the recently announced partnership between Public Power Corporation (PPC) and Amazon Web Services.
The prime minister also highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence in public administration, aimed at improving how government services function in their dealings with citizens.
