Greece has released its 2027 vehicle road tax notices on the myCAR online platform operated by the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), giving car and motorcycle owners until December 31, 2026, to pay without a penalty.

Those who miss the deadline will face additional charges that increase according to how late they make their payment.

How to pay the 2027 road tax

Vehicle owners can download or print their payment notices through the myCAR platform. Payment can be made through a bank using the RF payment reference code shown on the notice.

Alternatively, customers can scan the QR code on the document to complete the transaction through their bank’s mobile app, provided the app supports this option.

Drivers are advised to check the amount due and the payment details before completing the transaction and to keep the payment receipt for their records.

Late payment penalties

The deadline for paying the 2027 road tax without an additional charge is December 31, 2026. Penalties for passenger cars and motorcycles will increase in stages:

  • By December 31, 2026: No penalty.
  • During January 2027: A surcharge of 25% of the road tax.
  • During February 2027: A surcharge of 50%.
  • From March 1, 2027: A surcharge of 100%.

Owners who pay from March onward will therefore owe an additional amount equal to their original road tax bill, effectively doubling their total payment.

The same 100% penalty applies when an owner fails to pay or makes only a partial payment through their own fault. For vehicles with annual road tax below €30, the penalty is set at €30. Separate provisions apply to other vehicle categories.

How to place a vehicle in digital immobilization

Owners who do not intend to use their car or motorcycle can declare it digitally immobilized through myCAR. To avoid paying road tax for 2027, the vehicle must be legally placed in immobilization before the start of the new year.

A separate option allows owners to pay road tax proportionally, based on the number of months they intend to use their vehicle. This arrangement applies to passenger cars and motorcycles that are already under immobilization and becomes available on April 1 each year.

The payment must be made in a single installment, but the amount covers only the selected months of use. Vehicles that have not been placed in immobilization are not eligible for this arrangement and remain subject to the full annual road tax.

How monthly road tax is calculated

The amount is calculated by dividing the annual road tax by 12 and multiplying the result by the number of months the vehicle will be in use.

For example, owners pay:

  • One month: One-twelfth of the annual road tax.
  • Two months: Two-twelfths.
  • Six months: Six-twelfths.

What to know before ending digital immobilization

Owners should be aware of two important rules when requesting the removal of a vehicle’s immobilization status.

First, the month in which immobilization is lifted counts as a full month, even if the vehicle is authorized for use toward the end of that month. For example, if an owner lifts immobilization on June 25 and pays road tax for two months, the vehicle can be driven through July 31.

Second, the authorized period of use begins on the date the request is submitted, not the date the payment is made. Owners should therefore complete the payment promptly to avoid losing part of the period they have selected.
