Kyriakos Mitsotakis launched a harsh, all-out attack on Alexis Tsipras during a radio interview with Alpha. He questioned the former prime minister’s so-called rebranding and brought back into focus his government’s choices on criminal legislation.

The occasion was the discussion about the “big fish” and the uncovering of illegal activity involving millions of euros. Sharply raising the tone, he accused the former prime minister of having done “only” two things: passing the Paraskevopoulos law in 2015, which, as he said, “let people out of prison,” and keeping Parliament open to change the Penal Code. “He owes an answer as to why he kept Parliament open and what IOUs he cashed in,” he said, giving his criticism a directly personal character.

The prime minister noted that state authorities have been working on these cases for years, but stressed that political will is also needed to deal with them. “We respond with our work,” he said, contrasting the recent cases with the record of the Tsipras government.

With these remarks, Mitsotakis targeted Alexis Tsipras’s effort to reposition himself politically, insisting that the former prime minister must give answers for the decisions made during his time in government.

Relations With the US and Concern Over the Gulf

On foreign policy, when asked about the midterm elections in the United States, the prime minister stressed that Greek-American relations run deep, and said he believes a possible shift in the balance of power in Congress will not affect them.

He also said the government is preparing for the possibility of renewed military tension in the Gulf, linking a potential resumption of military operations to added pressure on the cost of living. As he pointed out, such a development would not help in tackling high prices, which is why, as he said, the government is putting “safeguards” in place.
