A plastics factory in the Megara industrial zone, due west of the Athens-Piraeus area, erupted in flames on Monday evening and was completely destroyed.
As a result, thick black smoke blanketed the area, with civil defense authorities later issuing an alert via SMS to local residents to stay indoors and close doors and windows.
The fire broke out at about 20.30 under unknown circumstances, with the sizable quantities of flammable materials inside the plant fueling a massive conflagration. Explosions heard from inside the plant are attributed to propane tanks erupting.
A significant fire-fighting force was dispatched to the site.
No injuries were reported.
