Traffic through Omonia Square in central Athens was cut off Wednesday after authorities discovered a suspicious package outside the National Transparency Authority.
Special police units were immediately dispatched to the scene to assess the situation. According to initial reports, two abandoned briefcases were found on a sidewalk outside the National Transparency Authority, prompting swift mobilization of the Greek Police.
Authorities have diverted traffic starting from Alkminis Street, urging drivers to avoid Omonia Square and seek alternative routes until the investigation is completed.
Omonia Square, meaning “Concord Square”, lies just north of Athens’ downtown and is a key traffic hub served by the Omonia metro station. The area sees heavy pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which has amplified the disruption caused by the security alert.
Officials confirmed later on Wednesday that the contents of the packages posed no threat.
Residents and drivers were advised to stay clear of the square and follow official updates for safety information.
