A serious road accident occurred on Syggrou Avenue in Athens on Tuesday night, July 16, shortly after 23:00. The incident took place in the northbound lanes heading toward central Athens and has resulted in at least one serious injury.

How the Incident Unfolded

According to initial reports, the driver of a grey car attempted to overtake another vehicle using the middle lane. For reasons that remain unknown, the driver lost control of the car. The vehicle first struck a car traveling in the right lane and then crashed into the metal barriers dividing the roadway.

The crash left the vehicle partially immobilized across the road. Moments later, another car traveling at high speed in the left lane collided with the crashed vehicle, unable to avoid the impact.

Emergency services, including ambulances from the National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAV) and fire brigade units, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The driver of the car that initially lost control sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to the General State Hospital of Nikaia.

Traffic Disruption and Emergency Response

Following the collision, traffic on the northbound side of Syggrou Avenue was heavily affected. Movement was reduced to a single lane, causing significant delays for approximately one hour.

Fortunately, no additional injuries were reported. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident, while emergency crews worked swiftly to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.
