The founder of a Greek nongovernmental organization (NGO) is expected to appear before an investigating magistrate on Thursday as part of an inquiry into the organization’s financial management and the misuse of donated funds.
His partner has already testified, reportedly placing responsibility for the management and alleged waste of the organization’s money on him. Evidence included in the case file refers to luxury vacations, expensive gifts and cash deposits into third parties’ bank accounts.
The investigation centers on donations made by members of the public that authorities suspect were used to cover the founder’s personal expenses and lifestyle.
Case file details luxury hotel stays and relationships
Among the expenses under scrutiny is a hotel stay in Pefkochori, in the northern Greek region of Halkidiki. According to details cited in the case file, the founder visited a hotel there on August 24 and rented a suite for two nights at a reported cost of between €700 and €800 per night. He then invited a foreign woman to join him.
The case file also reportedly includes a telephone conversation dated September 1, 2026, in which he told another woman that he had found a new romantic partner. The material refers to at least two women in connection with the founder’s personal relationships.
Expensive gifts and monthly payments under scrutiny
Investigators are also examining other expenses paid for with NGO funds.
Telephone conversations included in the case file reportedly refer to purchases of expensive gifts, including a handbag worth €2,500 and a pair of earrings costing €500.
The records also contain references to regular monthly deposits of €1,000 into a bank account belonging to another woman.
The founder is expected to provide his account of the organization’s financial management before the investigating magistrate. The allegations remain under investigation.
