Athens’ Panepistimio metro station will close at 9:30 a.m. Thursday by order of police, ahead of an education-sector demonstration scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the Propylaea in central Athens.
During the closure, trains on Metro Line 2 will pass through the station without stopping. Passengers will not be able to board or exit trains there until further notice.
The decision was taken on security grounds as part of heightened police measures ahead of the rally.
Students and teachers demand free public education
The demonstration brings together university student associations, school students and teachers calling for public and free education, as well as improved conditions across the education system.
The central slogan of the mobilization is: “From Greece to France, we fight for public and free education.”
Protesters are due to gather at 11 a.m. at the Propylaea, the historic entrance area of the University of Athens in central Athens. Similar demonstrations are planned in other cities across Greece.
The Federation of Secondary Education State School Teachers (OLME) has announced a work stoppage from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday to allow teachers to participate.
In its announcement, OLME said it stood alongside students and university groups “who are demanding the right to public and free education, to the studies and the life they deserve.”
Alternative metro stations
Passengers traveling to central Athens are advised to use the nearby Syntagma and Omonia stations instead and to account for the temporary change when planning their journeys.
