Three people died Sunday night after a car plunged into the sea at Gate E2 of the port of Piraeus, Greece’s largest port, during a severe storm.
The accident occurred as the vehicle was disembarking from a ferry. Heavy rain reduced visibility dramatically, and initial assessments suggest that the 82-year-old driver lost his bearings and drove off the pier into deep water.
The Coast Guard and nearby vessels immediately launched a rescue operation, but all three occupants died.
A 45-year-old man was the first to be recovered from the water. He was unconscious, and his death was subsequently confirmed.
Coast Guard personnel later located the driver and a 72-year-old woman on the seabed inside the submerged vehicle. Both remained trapped in the car, still wearing their seat belts.
Authorities have launched a preliminary investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
