A well-known sports journalist and announcer, Manolis Mavrommatis, remained in an Athens hospital’s ICU on Tuesday after sustaining serious burns at his apartment on Saturday evening. Mavrommatis, 82, who also served as a MEP in the European Parliament with New Democracy (ND) party, was injured in a fire along with his wife, 80.

The fire brigade said the blaze in the upscale central Athens district of Kolonaki began in the kitchen, and possibly due to a pot left unattended on an open stovetop.

Mavrommatis’ iconic voice is associated with the “golden age” of Greek sports broadcasting in the 1970s, ‘80s and into the ‘90s. A proficient speaker of Italian, among others, he was also a veteran print sportswriter and considered as a specialist in Italy’s Seria A and Spain’s La Liga.
